Grand Valley State University in partnership with Consumers Energy broke ground today on a new $15 million, three-story leadership center on the university’s downtown campus in Grand Rapids.

“(The facility) represents the power of private-public partnerships that are at the heart of Grand Valley’s history and our recently updated strategic plan,” says Thomas Haas, president of Grand Valley.

The 35,000 square foot center is designed for Jackson-based Consumers Energy’s leadership training sessions, employee orientation, technical and safety training, and project management training and certification. When the utility is not using the facility, Grand Valley officials will have access to the center.

“This center will not only build tomorrow’s leaders for Consumers Energy, it will also leverage the expertise of Grand Valley faculty, staff, and the university’s facilities here on the Robert C. Pew Campus,” says John Russell, president and CEO of Consumers Energy.

Grand Valley’s main campus is in nearby Allendale, west of Grand Rapids.

The training center is scheduled to open in late 2016.
