Washington, DC – On Monday, July 18, 2011, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will visit Detroit to highlight the Obama Administration’s commitment to supporting the U.S. automotive industry and creating the high-technology jobs of tomorrow

On Monday morning, Secretary Chu will join Michigan Senator Carl Levin, Representative John Dingell, Representative Sander Levin, and A123 Systems CEO David Vieau for a tour of the A123 Systems plant in Romulus, Mich.  A123 Systems makes advanced Lithium Ion batteries for electric vehicles.  Thanks in large part to a $249 million grant it received as part of the Recovery Act to start manufacturing batteries and packs for electric vehicles, A123 Systems recently hired its 1,000th employee in Michigan.   The Department of Energy’s support for A123 Systems is part of the Obama Administration’s effort to help make the American auto industry more competitive and create the high tech jobs of tomorrow here at home.  Following the tour, Vieau, Secretary Chu, Senator Levin, Representative Dingell, and Representative Levin will participate in a press conference at 12:00 noon.
